A Brief History of Family Day in Canada

Family Day is a statutory holiday celebrated on the third Monday of every February in six provinces. Family Day recognizes the significance of family life to individuals. 

This holiday was first celebrated in Alberta in 1990. Then-premier Don Getty created it to honour family values and provide hard-working individuals the ability to spend more time with family. Nearly two decades later, the holiday was adopted in Saskatchewan and Ontario in the late 2000s. Most recently, New Brunswick declared Family Day as a statutory holiday in 2018. 

Unlike other holidays such as Canada Day, Family Day doesn't have set activities. Instead, it is up to each family how they would like to mark the day. The good news is that most provinces will organize Family Day activities and events that the whole family will enjoy. 

For example, Kelowna Museums is running the child-friendly Amazing Animals of the Okanagan program. Or, maybe you'd prefer to spend time at the Niagara Falls Family Day event.
